MY SANGGUNIANG KABATAAN JOURNEY

Rampant corruption in the government: What’s new about it?

Before I entered into politics last 2007, my perception of our government was an ideal one; I am very optimistic to the kind of system that we are having and it makes me proud being a Filipino.

Corrupting the Youth!

The government whom I believe an ideal; the system that I am very optimistic about and the integrity and veracity of my Filipino identity became blurred because of a certain occurrence.

I am a political candidate of Sangguniang Kabataan 2007 election, not to sound arrogant and offensive to anyone – I am indeed secure of my track records being a student leader, Eagle Scout, lay minister in the church and honor student. I thought I had already all the qualities and requirements of being a potential leader in the Sangguniang Kabataan Organization.

I was surprised of the thought that even a young aspiring politician like me also need a huge amount of money and follow the system of traditional politicking just to win the Sangguniang Kabataan Elections but due to my family’s economic condition, I could not afford to allow my parents to spend thousands of pesos just for a risky election.

There were even news that was brought to us, I don’t know if the purpose is only to intimidate us or what, that one of my opponents gave P100.00 to those voters who will favored him – that allegation is still a rumor to me because I could not find any evidence to support it. Only God knows what had really happened! That information never gave me a reason to stumble down or to back out but instead it drives me more to continue my journey of becoming the Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman.

We could not afford to buy someone’s vote because financially speaking we are not rich. What I can offer to the young citizens of my barangay was my capacity as a leader, my undying dedication to public service and my utmost commitment to a genuine and transparent government.

I only spent P800.00 pesos of that said election because I am very resourceful. I seek financial support to my friends – doctor, engineer and businessmen. I am acquainted to them it is for the reason that at a very young age I volunteer my self to the Rotary Organization and church activities, thus, establishing a friendship and connection to them was never that complicated. They share their blessings to me, they became my supporters and sponsors and I am very grateful to them.

To make the long story of my candidacy short – I won the Sangguniang Kabataan 2007 elections and hold the position as SK Chairman of Brgy. Visayan Village.

I never had an idea that I might become the Federation President of SK Tagum City, not even in my dreams I have visited by this kind of thought. It just happened!

Week after I was proclaimed as the newly elected SK Chairman of Brgy. Visayan Village, my mentor in high school called to me saying that the position of the presidency of the SK Federation of Tagum will be having a selection and it’s open to all SK chairmen, so that we will be given equal rights and privileges. My first reaction to her statement was “Okay maam, so, what is it all about? What do you mean?” She then responded to me that she really wanted me to submit to the steering committee my application for the said position. She was very pushy saying that I must proceed immediately to Pots&Grills for an orientation meeting. I even protested saying that “I haven’t even take a bath” and she told me directly that I should take a bath later.

I was alone at the venue, my fellow chairman have their parents accompanying them. At that very instance, I have no idea what is this SK Federation all about! I am ignorant about it! All I have in mind is that it’s costly and expensive to be put in there.

Correcting the Errors!

It was then that Mayor Rey T. Uy rendered his speech; I was amazed on how he delivered it because it’s new to me that such a Chinese man very articulate in the vernacular language even has a good sense of humor using that language – that was my first encounter with the mayor. But what caught my attention was when he describes how the campaign tactics was being played during SK Federation Election.

A candidate who has the interest to run as SK Federation President should make sure that he/she must have the majority of votes of his fellow chairmen. It means to say that; in Tagum City there are 23 Barangays, therefore having 23 SK Chairperson. The candidate now will choose 13 or 14 Chairpersons among the 23 that can be bribe of privileges, free trips, latest cellular phones and of course money.

After learning that from the speaker, I then instantaneously asked my self “What the heck this government is imposing? They are like injecting our young once an infectious disease that later on it will be mutated into a virus, thus, decaying the moral and integrity of our Filipino youth.

At that very instance I can sense that the Uy administration would like to correct the error that the young generations are exposed to. Whatever motives or intentions the Uy administrations have in mind… I don’t care! As long as its purpose is to protect every Filipino youth’s integrity and self-worth, I am into it!

Tough Steering Committee

After that serious orientation, I headed home immediately. I prepared all the documents that I’ll need with my portfolio. I am spiritually elevated at that time and really have that driving force to submit my self to the steering committee.
The interview was held at Saint Mary’s College and it was graced by 6 prominent individuals representing the different sectors in the community. I was never nervous when It’s already my moment to face the panel, it might that I am already into this kind of situation since I already experience being interviewed by a panel. I am confident with my answers because I answered it based on my conscience and principles. I can even recall most of the questions being thrown to me because it’s one of the most memorable moments of my life.

And again to make my journey towards achieving the SK Federation Presidential position short. I won the race and I was oath into office December 1. 2007.

Period of Adjustments

My First appearance to the Sangguniang Panlungsod was nerve-racking, I was bombarded by questions from my fellow City Councilors and in response with utmost courtesy I answered those queries intellectually. I am very careful with all my comments, suggestions and even recommendations because I believe that my character is always at risk every time I utter a word or make any statements. It may or may not contribute a positive impact to the general public.

Working while studying became the most challenging and sometimes depressing condition into my being; I combat these challenges with self – discipline and time management. It was then that time was not anymore a problem to me; it’s the virtue of patience to stupid people that I don’t have acquired until now.

My work as a young politician consumes most of my time – even Saturdays and Sundays but as raised in a disciplinarian and straightforward Roman Catholic I see to it that I can find time attending mass on Sundays or even weekdays.

My 3 years of hardwork, dedication and commitment to public service molded me as to what I am today; it sharpens more of my knowledge and intellect to politics and government service; it widens the horizon on how I perceive things, interpret phenomena and made a decision – either personal or work related.

love conquers fear

Why are people unable to do good things? They make two mistakes. They remember things of the past; and they look at others to see how others are looking at them. Before doing anything, they are concerned about how others are seeing them. "This one is like that, and this one is like that" - such thoughts waste time and energy.

Critical and fearful thoughts concerning others come from lack of self-respect. Those who have fear of others have fear about themselves, and become nervous. There isn't strength inside.

Adopt the attitude: "I have to do this. I have to do it now. I am very clear about what I have to do. All my focus is on this. Let me do, such that I am useful to God and to others. Otherwise, why am I living this life?

A time to saw, A time to reap

Sow an intention and reap a thought.
Sow a thought and reap a feeling.
Sow a feeling and reap an attitude.
Sow an attitude and reap an action.
Sow an action and reap a habit.
Sow a habit and reap a personality.
Sow your personality into all your relationship on your journey through life and you will reap a destiny.

Province of Davao del Norte Monday Morning Convocation

I am very thankful that God opened another opportunity to express the thoughts that I have and share it to other people.

I was invited by the Provincial Accountant’s Office to stand as guest speaker on their Monday Convocation program and without hesitation I accepted their invitation. The theme was “Companionship: It’s Significance to Society”. It so happened that I was the one who conceptualized the subject matter of the said event.

I feel so blessed because it’s the first assignment of the beginning of something new in my life since the day before the event was my Birthday. My girlfriend even surprised me a gift which is a pair of black leather shoes (W Brown) because she knew that my old shoes was already not in its good state – I love you very much hon!

I feel very lucky because the two most important women of my life – my Lola Lucring and my honeylababidabi Vanessa were present during the convocation program. Their support even strengthens and builds more confidence into my being.

And the rest was history. I really enjoy my moment together with the Governor of the Province of Davao del Norte, Board Members in attendance and all the employees present during that time. I even heard comments saying “That was the best convocation program we ever had” – it overwhelmed me.

The most important thing that matters to me is that I deliver my speech in the glory of God and offer it to Him.

"I have come not to abolish but to fulfill" - Jesus

Jesus said to his disciples “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill’. I am not an expert of the Bible nor have any degree in theology or even have a certificate of mastering a bible course; I am writing this reflection based on my opinion and my spiritual insights.

I was taught since from the beginning of my earthly awakening that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and God sent forth his son to grant us all the salvation from the unending fires of hell. I am convinced that Jesus Christ is the living messiah and the bearer of deliverance to humanity. My catechist mentor told me that Jesus Christ have done many great things here on earth, like spreading the word of God, healing the sick people, grant forgiveness to the cruel individual and teaches morality and encourage people to have faith to God the Father.

I am fortunate that I was raised in a family whose grandmother is a strict implementer of Christian Doctrine. At the age of six I am mastered to recite and pray the Holy Rosary, I have memorized the prayer before meals and prayer before going to bed. I am blessed to have this kind of life, a life who’s center is God.

We are Christ followers and whatever Christ have started we are obliged to continue the good works he has done. Can you still recite the 10 commandments? Are you aware of these commandments? Do you still religiously obeying the commandments of God?

10 commandments

1.                You shall have no other gods before me.

2.               You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

3.               You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

4.               Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

5.               Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

6.               You shall not murder.

7.               You shall not commit adultery.

8.               You shall not steal.

9.               You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10.          You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

It is our duty to continue sharing and spreading the commandments of God because these are our passport to heaven. Even God have said that whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of God.

Memorandum - DISCON 2012

Forgiving our brother with all our heart!

Forgiveness might be the most difficult thing to confer to our fellowmen who have sinned against us. I believe that humans are structured with the resemblance of the Supreme Being; therefore I could say that If God is a merciful God then why not his children also seize the same characteristic.

As I have observed in the television shows, novels, short stories, fictional stories and works of poetry, they have all things in common -  vengeance, revenge and reprisal. Is it really necessary for an individual to fight back if being oppressed? We are labeled as the highest form of living thing in the animal kingdom; we are very special and unique species because we are the only genus who could think well and used our knowledge and wisdom in everything we do. Hatred is not at answer but Forgiveness!

The scripture taught me to forgive those who have sinned against me not just seventy times but seventy-seven times. After reading the gospel my reaction was “WHOA!” I find it difficult to manifest but I believe that with the Devine intervention of the Holy Spirit this can be done!

I am a politician and we all know that – politics is dirty! If proven correct then I am living in the dirty environment! But my comment to that statement is this “Politics is not supposed to be dirty, it became filthy because of those people who have unclean thoughts and grimy intentions, those people who have full of greed, desire and lust of power, wealth and possession, those individual that have no single conscience or fear to do immoral acts either they engage themselves into corruption, fraud and abuse of power. I belong to the new generation, I believe that my blood is purer that those traditional politicians, my principles is more wholesome than those dishonest elected official and my character is more hygienic than  those depraved officer. If I will dwell and lived up to their world, I can see no future to our country – it means to greater success for my fellowmen and no superior glory for God! If I will not act now, if I will not start doing the right and appropriate dealings and if I will not begin the fight for decency and straightforwardness then when will it be? Who will initiate the battle for excellence?”

Amidst all those wretched politicians, I still grant them my forgiveness, even though they fool us but still they deserved our forgiveness. God forgive those who tortured and mock Him, how can’t I forgive those who indirectly commit inadequacy towards me. I have numbers of detractors since I am exposed to politics at a very young age and stand to what is precise, even though they plotted evil against me, spread deceitful words adjacent to me but still I forgive them because my God taught me to do so.

Forgiveness is a valuable gift we can bestow to our brothers and sisters – it can’t be bought nor sold by anybody.

Let’s forgive our brother with all our heart!
